‘Fix You’: The Ultimate Love Story

It’s said that Henry Wadsworth Longfellow coined the phrase “Music is the universal language of mankind”. That’s a bold statement – but one that I believe holds merit because music is, indeed, a very powerful and beautiful creation. Music sets and changes moods, music heals, music encourages, music breaks down, music hurts, music speaks clearly those thoughts that we sometimes can’t verbalize. I believe God can use anything for His purpose – it doesn’t necessarily have to be overtly “spiritual” or “Christian”. That certainly holds true for His gift of music as well.

A song that has really captivated me is the Boyce Avenue/Tyler Ward cover version of Coldplay’s “Fix You”. I first heard Boyce Avenue’s version used in the CTFxC wedding video (one of my favorites videos ever on YouTube). Personally, I prefer the emotional and powerful vocals of Boyce Avenue and Tyler Ward over Coldplay’s original version. This song is obviously about romantic love – someone who passionately loves another person and wants to protect that person from the hurt of their past and present.

Take a listen/watch the YouTube video and follow the lyrics below. When you’re done, skip down a little further to see if you agree with my thought pattern of how this song can go beyond the intended theme of romantic love…

When You Try Your Best But You Don’t Succeed
When You Get What You Want But Not What You Need
When You Feel So Tired But You Can’t Sleep
Stuck In Reverse

And The Tears Come Streaming Down Your Face
When You Lose Something You Can’t Replace
When You Love Someone But It Goes To Waste
Could It Be Worse?

Lights Will Guide You Home
And Ignite Your Bones
And I Will Try To Fix You

And High Up Above Or Down Below
When You’re Too In Love To Let It Go
But If You Never Try You’ll Never Know
Just What You’re Worth

Lights Will Guide You Home
And Ignite Your Bones
And I Will Try To Fix You

Tears Stream Down Your Face
When You Lose Something You Cannot Replace
Tears Stream Down Your Face
And I

Oh Woah Oh

Tears Stream Down Your Face
I Promise You I Will Learn From My Mistakes
Tears Stream Down Your Face
And I

Lights Will Guide You Home
And Ignite Your Bones
And I Will Try To Fix You

This totally feels like a love song and romantic love between a guy and girl was definitely at the forefront of my mind. But, after enough listens, the words started to change. I started hearing “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” (Psalm 34:18) For me, the song changed from how we humans falsely think we can totally fix or “complete” each other through relationships to hearing how God ACTUALLY does complete our brokenness. (1 Peter 5:10)

Now, listen to the song again – picturing Jesus singing to you about relentlessly pursuing you – every part of you – to complete your brokenness – to make you whole – to lastingly fix you for an eternity with Him.

Another GREAT song along these lines, but blatantly about Christ’s love for us, is ‘Beloved‘ by Tenth Avenue North (& behind the song).

I’ve gathered some verses to go along with some of the lyrics in the song. Check them out with your hearts focused on searching God’s nature – as found in His words, the Bible. I’m sure this will be an ever-evolving post as I discover more of who God is and how He restores us to Himself.

When You Try Your Best But You Don’t Succeed

Proverbs 3:5-6 “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.”

When You Get What You Want But Not What You Need

Matthew 6:31-34 “So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

When You Feel So Tired But You Can’t Sleep

Matthew 11:28-30 (Jesus says) “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Stuck In Reverse

Philippians 1:6 “…being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”

Romans 12:12 “Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer”

Colossians 1:11-12 “…being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, 12 and giving joyful thanks to the Father, who has qualified you[a] to share in the inheritance of his holy people in the kingdom of light.”

And The Tears Come Streaming Down Your Face

1 Peter 5:10 “And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast”

When You Lose Something You Can’t Replace

Psalm 30:5b “weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning”

When You Love Someone But It Goes To Waste

Romans 8:28 “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who[a] have been called according to his purpose.”

Could It Be Worse?

Romans 8:18 “I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.”

2 Timothy 3:12 “In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted”

Lights Will Guide You Home And Ignite Your Bones

Ezekiel 26:27 “And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws.”

John 16:13 “But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.”

Zechariah 4:6 “…‘Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the Lord Almighty.”

Romans 8:14 “For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God”

Romans 8:26-27 “In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. 27 And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.”

And I Will Try To Fix You

Humans try. Christ DID. Christ DOES.

2 Corinthians 12:9-10 “But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. 10 That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”

James 1:17 “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows”
